A ad banner or web banner is a form of online advertising on the internet. The most famous of course are Google ads which stereotypically show up on the right hand margin of a website or webpage. Flashy, intriguing or eye fixating images tend to work best rather than bland or boring text ads. These ads attract ones attention from the content they are reading in hopes of directing to a better source of content via online ad banners.

The ad banners are made from an image type such as GIF, Flash, PNG, JPEG etc and often employs the use of animation, sound, or video to maximize presence. Images are usually in a high-aspect ratio shape (i.e. either wide and short, or tall and narrow) hence the reference to banners.
